I now have all the VW bug sheetmetal in place. This 2nd fitting has revealed that the front wheels are too far forward and must be moved back 3/4″. All 4 fenders appear that they will need to be flaired somewhat to accommodate the Toyota MR2’s drive-train. All in all, I am happy with the results.

  1. Hi, I would like to thank you for sharing your project with the world. If it is anything it is inspirational and informative. In my opinion Cal-Look bugs have become astoundingly uniform, the owners all serious about how unique and wonderful there car is, just like every single other Type 1 owned by a 50 year old, stodgy zealot. Years back at a car-show my wife remarked “Oh wow look at the chrome trim the owners installed.” She had never seen a stock bug. That’s when I knew it was time to move on and evolve, Cal-Look has run it’s course. Hey, can I mind your business for a moment? Your writing style is extremely compact and appears to be written like a series of notes to yourself. Reading it is like trying to take a drink from a fire hose. Could you dumb it down a little for me? Great project, great website and I am impressed with your resourcefulness and drive. My bug is slowly turning into a salt-flats and Silver State Classic machine. I’ve taken a terrible brow-beating from other VW owners when I talk about narrowing the fenders to reduce the frontal area or fabricating wind management solutions improve the laminar flow and move the turbulent vortices as far aft of the car as possible. The process has been recorded on video and I can only hope to have a site as nice as yours in a few years.
